The Mentor... Builder and developer H.J. Russell & Company, one of the USs largest minority-owned enterprises, helps shape city skylines. The company operates as a general contractor, construction manager, and environmental contractor and has worked on airports and arenas, commercial buildings, and public works projects. It develops real estate and specializes in urban dwellings and affordable housing, including multifamily housing units, student dormitories, and senior living centers. As a property manager, H.J. Russell handles more than 12,000 apartment homes and public housing units. The family-owned company was founded by Chairman Herman J. Russell in 1952. It operates primarily in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic US. Russell is a philanthropist at heart and generously gives back to his community in many ways. He is the founder of the Herman J. Russell Foundation, Inc., which focuses on entrepreneurship, mentoring and development in youth. In 1999, he donated a total of $4 million to the entrepreneurship programs of his alma mater, Tuskegee University and Atlanta-based Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University and Morehouse College. He advises, "Equip yourself well. Whatever you want to be, give 500% to that effort. Be honest to yourself and others, and always remember, theres no substitute for hard work and sacrifices."
